Lettering and doodling artist Frsn's straightforward guide to creative lettering techniques gives readers a wealth of innovative ideas on how to shape and decorate letters for a variety of creative projects. Covering serif, sans serif, script, and decorative alphabets, the book provides easy-to-follow brushstroke directions to alter letters by varying their angles or adding flourishes to ascenders and descenders. Although the author recommends a number of supplies, many of the exercises in the book can be practiced with an ordinary pen or pencil. The book demonstrates inventive and creative ways to embellish letters with patterns or shadows, to blend colors for interesting effects, and to add whimsical drawings to a lettering project. This encourages readers skeptical of their skills to focus on easily reproduced shapes. Other helpful advice includes how to create balanced and attractive page layouts. This book, however, does not cover traditional calligraphy techniques, an omission that might confuse some readers. VERDICT A great lettering and calligraphy resource that's filled with inventive ideas, rather than traditional approaches. Readers interested in exploring creative lettering will likely find this to be a helpful title for getting started.--Sara Shreve
