"Making New Friends with Baby King" is a bilingual (English and Chinese) children's storybook. It is the first of five books in the "Baby King and Friends" series. The stories are about the adventures of Baby King, a baby kingfisher, and his friends as they visit the different parks in Singapore, make new friends and learn many new things. Written at a time when the COVID-19 outbreak prevented young children from going out of their homes, the stories helped to bring the outdoors to those who were cooped up at home. By following Baby King's adventures, readers are able to experience the outdoors. The stories aim to nurture an appreciation of nature as well as appeal to the young readers' curiosity. Simply written and colorfully illustrated, each story also contains a simple message that helps the young reader to manage specific anxieties or challenges.Because of the lack of opportunities to socialise with others, some children develop stranger anxiety. Making New Friends with Baby King was written to help young children overcome their shyness. In this story, the young reader visiting the beautiful Gardens by the Bay is welcomed by Baby King, who lives there and wants to be friends. He shows the young visitor around the gardens and brings him to meet his other friends. The story ends with this invitation: "Will you be our friend?"It is an invitation that leaves the young reader with the comforting feeling that he or she is not alone, that it is easy to make new friends, and that it is good to have many friends.The early childhood years are the best time to learn languages, and reading bilingual stories is a simple way to learn the English and Chinese languages.
