The Oregon textile company presents more than 30 exciting recipes that aim to “connect us to the great outdoors” in this slim but inventive volume. While the editors note that “this isn’t an ultimate how-to manual for success,” they cover the bases of campfire cooking with tips on what kind of equipment to bring (waterproof matches, cast-iron skillets, can opener) and how to set up a fire. Recipes are inspired by different camping regions: blackberry and herb pancakes are a nod to the abundance of berries and herbs that can be foraged in the forest; spicy stuffed whole fish is an ode to the shore; and chilaquiles with crumbly cheese complement the “hot days and cold nights” of the desert. Readers will appreciate the convenience of preparing parts of recipes—such as the creamy “secret sauce” for white cheddar beer burgers and the snickerdoodle cookies to be used for s’mores—at home ahead of their adventures. The book also offers plenty of serving suggestions to maximize cooler space and suit a wide range of different tastes (for the Alpine grilled cheese, they suggest add-ons including smoked turkey, bacon, and fig spread). Those with some experience in campfire cooking will savor the flavors of this handy guide.
