An immersive, sultry, heart-pounding historical reimagining of the Robin Hood ballads, told through the piercing eyes of one of his spies.
Jane Crowe is an ordinary peasant girl who never dreamed she would work for the infamous Lord of the Greenwood. But when she’s forced out of her home, she has no choice but to turn to Robin Hood for help—and he makes her an irresistible offer. He needs a pair of eyes in the King’s Houses, and quiet, unassuming Jane—who has spent her whole life going unnoticed—will be the perfect spy.
At first, Jane’s work for Robin seems straightforward. She whispers to him about the nobles at King’s Houses and all their secrets, including the new Sheriff of Nottingham, who would like nothing more than to see Robin Hood’s head on a spike. But the more Jane is drawn into Robin’s world, the more she’s drawn to Robin himself—a man as charismatic as he is cunning, capable of plucking at her heart as easily as he notches an arrow. As Robin’s tricks grow increasingly dangerous, and shockingly violent, Jane starts to suspect that her hero cares more about his own legacy than helping the common people—and that despite his declarations of affection, he sees her as just another object to be stolen.
When Robin’s schemes implicate Jane in a brutal murder, she must decide: is she a prize to be won, a pawn to be used and discarded—or is she an equal player in the game between nobles and thieves?

In this fascinating retelling of the tale of Robin Hood, Jane Crowe is a servant whose quick judgement of character and unassuming nature put her in a position to help. But being part of Robin Hood's gang is not always easy. She is repeatedly tested to prove her loyalty. Jane also begins to realize that Robin is not quite the hero that she, and everyone else, thought him to be. Witnessing horrific torture and deception, Jane knows that she needs to find a way to separate herself from Robin, but she has just about given him her heart when her biggest test comes. In debut author Kaufman's historical note, she explains that she depicted the Robin Hood of medieval ballads, a depiction that predates the polished hero of the English Renaissance. The progression of Jane's realization of Robin's true nature is appealing to follow as she ends up in more and more dangerous situations. Readers will enjoy watching her decide if she will remain loyal to Robin or loyal to herself.

DEBUT Nineteen-year-old Jane Crowe's beau Bran helps her secure employment at the King's House in the kitchen, but it comes at a cost. Introduced by Bran to the charming outlaw Robin Hood, Lord of the Greenwood, and a group of fellow Barons' War compatriots, Jane falls under his spell and willingly participates in acts against the Crown. Even after hearing from trustworthy sources that Robin might not be all that he seems, Jane refuses to believe that supporting his actions might cost her everything. Kaufman has a PhD in medieval literature but kicks this debut novel up a notch by introducing readers to a more authentic version of the Robin Hood legend. With engaging and emotionally relatable characters, both fictional and based on real-life historical figures, Kaufman's story provides the right details to establish daily life and expectations or limitations of different social stations. The right amount of historical background and subtle inclusion of period-appropriate combat combine to make this action-adventure story a unique exploration of human relationships and growth. VERDICT Fans of thought-provoking historical fiction and compelling characters will enjoy this book.--Stacey Hayman
