《醒世姻缘传》长达一百多万字，描冤冤相报的两世姻缘故事，主角晁源射杀仙狐，又逼死妻子计氏，因果报应，仙狐死后化生為薛素姐，凌虐晁源死后託生的狄希陈，报冤雪恨，最后经高僧胡无翳点化，念《金刚经》一万遍，才消除冤业。书中的特点是人物的性格鲜明，对话大量运用山东方言，语言酣畅，多插科打諢，部分故事情节暴露了现实政治的黑暗腐朽。
